I must correct your story facts about Capt. Young’s place in LAPD history. While she is an important part of the history of African Americans on the LAPD, and is indeed the first African American woman to achive the rank of captain, she is not the first African American to achieve that rank. That distinction belongs to another important African American in LAPD’s history, Homer Broome who acheived that distinction in in 1969. Since that time, there have been many black men to hold that rank, however, Ann Young was the first black woman. Since that time, Ann has paved the way for 3 other African American female captains on the LAPD.
