The King of Love is Dead as Nina Simone called it in her song written after learning about MLK’s death.

Let’s go full circle here…

April 3, 1968 MLK speaks to city workers in Memphis, giving his famous (and my favorite) Mountaintop speech, less than 24 hours before he shot and killed.

April 4, 1968 Bobby Kennedy speaks about MLK’s death

Amid the tragedy of the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, April 4, 1968, an extraordinary moment in U.S. political history occurred as Robert F. Kennedy, younger brother of slain President John F. Kennedy, broke the news of King’s death to a large gathering of African Americans in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The gathering was actually a planned campaign rally for Robert Kennedy in his bid to get the 1968 Democratic nomination for President. Just after he arrived by plane at Indianapolis, Kennedy was told of King’s death. He was advised by police against making the campaign stop which was in a part of the city considered to be a dangerous ghetto. But Kennedy insisted on going.

He arrived to find the people in an upbeat mood, anticipating the excitement of a Kennedy appearance. He climbed onto the platform, and realizing they did not know, broke the news. (from historyplace.com)

Just 2 months later, almost to the very day, Bobby Kennedy was killed.

First all, thank you for your efforts on this post. You are truly great!

Now, I found what Michael Eric Dyson said about Martin Luther King on the Alan Colmes show last night very enlightening. Let me stumble through some points.

    (1) He tried to commit suicide twice(?) as a youth and was very much in touch with his own mortality. It seems that thoughts on suicide can be leveraged into great feats. Instead of reckless self destruction as demonstrated by “Hollywood” folks, someone who is in touch with their own mortality can be free from allot of limiting beliefs.

    (2) The things he said in “black” churches could make what Rev. Wright seem benign .
Imagine what it would be like if youtube and Sean Hannity was around back then. The man would be vilified over pettiness!

    (3) Prior to his death there was mixed opinions about him both from white and black people about him. It seems that people cant see other’s greatness until its too late. Dyson talked about his “whitewashing” and martyrdom. Why cant just get pass all the B.S.?
